Li-Fi- The WiFi Upgrade

Li-Fi technology is a ground-breaking light-based communication technology, which makes use of light waves instead of radio technology to deliver data. What we have done here is made the fiber optic technology wireless. To understand how fiber optic works kindly watch the following video.

As you see, in fiber optic cables, the data is transferred by turning a laser beam on and off at very high speeds. Every time the laser emits light, it is taken as 1 and every time its off, its taken as 0.

All data in the digital world is made up of ones and zeroes

Using this principle at very high speeds data is transferred.

So how is it related to Li-Fi ?

To make this technology wireless we take LED lights instead of normal lights. LED (Light emitting diode) is, as its name suggests- A Diode and is capable of turning on and off at very high speeds. Using the same principle of on being 1 and off being zero we can flicker a led at very high speeds and transfer data. The flickering of this LED is at speeds which are not noticeable to the human eye but can be noticed by a sensor which pics up this data stream.

Li-Fi Advantages

  1. Fast: Li-Fi is 100 times faster than normal Wi-Fi
  2. Secure: Unlike radio waves which travel through the walls, Li-Fi(Light waves) will only work inside your room or where ever you have installed the technology. Imagine Li-Fi replacing your Tube Lights.
  3. Cheap: The major part of this technology is cheaply available LED lights and software to control the flickering of these LED’s .

Disadvantages

If the sensor is covered and light is unable to reach it then data will not be transferred.
